Basic Boiler and Boiler types

Boiler

The basic working principle of boiler is very very simple to understand. A boiler or steam generator is a device used to create steam by applying heat energy to water . A boiler is used wherever a source of steam is required.

 The Basic Principle Of Boiler
The boiler is essentially a closed vessel inside which water is stored. Fuel is bunt in a furnace and hot gasses are produced. These hot gasses come in contact with water vessel where the heat of these hot gasses transfer to the water and consequently steam is produced in the boiler. Boiler are used in power plants in order to produce high pressured steam, so that the plant can generate electricity. The process that does this is know as the Rankine cycle.

Type Of Boiler.

There are mainly two types of boiler

  1. Fire tube boiler.
  2. Water tube boiler.

These are the main two types of boiler but each of the types can be sub divided into many.

Fire Tube Boiler :-
In fire tube boiler there are numbers of tubes through which hot gasses are passed and water surrounds these tubes.

Advantages of fire tube boiler:-
It is quite compact in construction.
Fluctuation of steam demand can be met easily.
It is also quite cheap.

Disadvantages of fire tube boiler:-

As the water required for operation of the boiler is quite large, it requires long time for rising steam at desired pressure.
As the water and steam are in same vessel the high pressure of steam is not possible.
The steam received from fire tube boiler is not very dry.

Water Tube Boiler :-

Water tube boiler is reverse of fire tube boiler. In water tube boiler the water is heated inside tubes and hot gasses surround these tubes.

Advantages of  water tube boiler:-

There are many advantages of water tube boier due to which these types of boiler are essentially used in large thermal power plant.
Large heating surface can be achieved by using more numbers of water tubes.
Operating a water tube boiler is safe and easy.
Due to convectional flow, movement of water is much faster than that of fire tube boiler, hence rate of heat transfer is high which results into higher efficiency.
Very high pressure in order of 140 kg/cm2 can be obtained smoothly.

Disadvantage of water tube boiler :-

The main disadvantage of water tube boiler is that it is not compact construction.
Maintenance cost for this boiler is high.
Water tube boiler use less water and for this reason, the water level needs to check randomly. A makeup water pump is used for supplying the necessary water.
Size is a difficulty for transportation and construction.

Industrial Boilers

Energy efficiency for industrial boiler is a highly boiler specific characteristic. No two boilers are alike. There are two identically designed, constructed side by side stoker fired boiler in Indiana burning the same fuel that have very different performance characteristics.
Details of industrial boiler:
The boiler are generally required in chemical, paper, pharmaceutical, sugar industries and many other.
Efficiency, reliability and cost are major factors in the design of industrial boilers similar to central stations.
High temperature and high pressure boiler are now days used even though high pressure and temperature are rarely, needed to process requirement but they are used to generate electricity to surging prices of the oil, most of the industrial boiler are designed to use wood, biogases, cane bagasse  municipal – pulverized coal, industrial solid waste and refinery gas few industrial boilers.
